International Human Rights Day

Today, on the 60th anniversary of the General Declaration of Human Rights you are invited to light a «candle of freedom» and to participate in the «letter marathon 2008» - as sign of your solidarity with the victims of human rights violations. Precisely 60 years ago the «General Declaration of Human Rights» was approved by the United Nations.

In most countries basic human rights - such as ban on torture and freedom of opinion - are not yet effective today. Amnesty International fights for the approval on a worldwide scale - through information and clarification of facts and through campaigns, as e.g. the annual letter marathon.

Participate in the Day of Human Rights: To sign a letter does not require much time, but can have considerable effect: the Ethiopian journalist Serkalem Fasil was liberated thanks to many letters during the letter marathon. She had published articles critical of the gouvernment. After her detention she gave birth to a son in prison.
