2008: UN year of the Dolphin

Dolphins have been called «friends of mankind» in early history. It is now time for mankind to become a better friend of dolphins. The common dolphin is now on the red list of threatened species. Thirty years back the common dolphin was a widespread species tumbling around in the Mediterranean Sea. Increasing human impacts in the oceans such as pollution and urbanisation have lead to a rapid decimation and dislocation of the populations.

The United Nations, Governments, intergovernmental organizations, NGOs and the tour operators built an alliance to achieve a common objective: to protect wild dolphins and create an ocean home that is safe from harm. The Year of the Dolphin was part of the UN Decade on Education for Sustainable Development. It was initiated 2007 and extended 2008.

Since 15 years OceanCare is active in the protecting marine mammals and their habitat through research, education, political and information campaigns. If we want our children to be able to admire the gracious animals in the Mediterranean we will have to find common solutions to protect what we care for.
>> Tip for gift: Support the work of OceanCare with a dolphin sponsorship.

Tip for 2009: Participate next summer actively in a protection project for dolphine in the Mediterranean and experience an unforgettable week on a sailboat.
