Financing climate protection projects
Today we would like to present two examples of how climate protection strategies are promoted in the private and public sector: Fuel-Switch project financed by carbon credits:
First Climate is a global leader in managing carbon assets: It covers the entire carbon credit value chain from developing emission reduction projects to marketing the carbon credits to investors, governments, industry and corporate clients both in the compliance and voluntary carbon markets.
One of First Climate’s voluntary emission reduction projects includes a renewable biomass project in the Brazilian ceramic industry: The main objective was to reduce the consumption of native firewood by switching to rice straw that would otherwise decay and produce methane emissions. Approximately 2,700 m3 of rice straw are consumed per month to provide the heat required in the ceramic factories, thus avoiding the deforestation of around 3,300 hectares per year. Due to its high replication potential the project can considerably contribute to finding energy alternatives and prevent deforestation in one of the most environmentally vulnerable regions of Brazil. It now vigorously promotes the renovation of buildings. More than half of the CO2 emissions in Switzerland are related to the construction and use of buildings. A renovation can reduce heat losses by 80 %. Over 200 buildings will be renovated entirely. To reach this goal the City invests 12 million francs. The house owners will not only save energy costs - they also improve their buildings in a sustainable way and, at the same time, make a valuable contribution to climate protection. Thanks to a building renovation programme of the Canton Basel-City CO2 emissions will be reduced by over 150'000 tons in 30 years.
