Swiss Federal Councillor, Moritz Leuenberger, is taking the «Climate Express» train to Copenhagen today

Climate change is going to be one of the biggest challenges of the future. The consequences can already be felt in many regions of the world. The World Climate Conference will end on December 18 in Copenhagen. Federal Councillor, Moritz Leuenberger, Switzerland's representative there, is speaking up for the climate cause. He is setting an example and taking the «Climate Express» train run by the Swiss Federal Railway from Berne to Copenhagen. This way, Leuenberger, a passionate train-traveller, is demonstrating a sustainable form of mobility.

Global interest has been concentrated on Copenhagen since December 7. Almost 200 signatory nations, including Switzerland, are represented there to develop the next phase of the UN Climate Convention and to ratify a follow-up treaty to the Kyoto Protocol.

Moritz Leuenberger will be accompanied on his train ride by 70 other politicians, scientists, businessmen as well as representatives from NGOs, young politicians, 20 students and the CEO of the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB). The SBB is responsible for this "Climate Express" train, which has City Night Light sleeping cars from the Deutsche Bahn, the German Railway.

The "Climate Express" train will offer a forum for political debates about climate, and young people will be able to participate.

The UIC (International Union of Railways) as part of an international campaign, proposed that European delegates to the Climate Change Conference travel by special train. For example, there was a Belgian "Climate Express" train taking passengers from Brussels.

The Indian delegation to the Copenhagen conference includes union environment minister, Jairan Ramesh. Media in India has been vociferously discussing the conflict of interest between developing and industrial nations.

India has adopted a sustainable national transport policy with the Ministry of Urban Development. Mumbai, for example, has a suburban railway system and is developing an underground and monorail.
