Clothing with an impact!

2009 is the international year of natural fiber. Coop as the worldwide largest retailer of fair textiles produced from bio-cotton is part of it. Under the label Naturaline Coop offers bio cotton clothes produced respecting economic, ecological and social criteria. Coop Naturaline is the primary partner of the Helvetas campaign for biological cultivation and fair trade in cotton production.

Economic: The cultivation of bio cotton gives farmers the possibility to reach a sustainable basis of living. Interest free credit makes farmers independent from money lenders, the spiral of indebtedness is broken. The ban on genetically modified seeds renders farmers independent from international conglomerates.

Ecological: Bio-cotton is produced in India and Tanzania. In the processing the textiles are bleached without the use of chlorine and dyed without the use of toxic heavy metals. By 2013 the entire Naturaline range shall become CO2-neutral. In two pilot projects already each one collection of CO2-neutral T-shirts have been produced. In India the CO2 emissions have been compensated by constructing a biogas facility. In Tanzania stoves with low emissions have been introduced.

Social: Naturaline, a partner of the bioRe foundation, supports several social projects, including animation schools in India. The concept of the animation school aims at giving underprivileged children the chance to go to school. There are various reasons: no school in the village, the way to school is too long or the parents are not interested.
