The United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2014), for which UNESCO is the lead agency, seeks to integrate the principles, values, and practices of sustainable development into all aspects of education and learning, in order to address the social, economic, cultural and environmental problems we face in the 21st century.
Generating Energy on the Play Ground: The Energee-Saw is being tested in Uganda and will be supplied in kit form with local materials then used to build the main structure of the see-saw. The local community is engaged in building the product - fostering a pride of ownership and providing work.
The product is intended to power low-drain electrical appliances at schools such as LED based lighting, mp3 devices, mobile phones and radios. These are small items that can make a significant difference to study, teaching and management in underpriviliged schools.
